This is an early 19th century brooch (circa 1820-1850). As it does not carry any hallmarks, we are not sure of its origin. The romantic miniature in the center has been painted on ivory placed on mother of pearl. It represents two young girls and a boy in a country environement. The miniature, which is of very high quality, has the fragility and sense of detail of Fragonard's (1732-1806) paintings. The oval frame is made in 18K yellow gold and its edges are embellished with 31 pearls. It is also decorated with four ornaments that are colored with black and green enamel. The jewel weighs 38.00 gram (24.43 dwt) for a length of 7.40 cm (2.91 inch) and is in excellent condition.
