This is a unique early 19th century mourning ring (circa 1829). Although it doesn’t carry any legible control marks we believe it is of French origin. It is entirely made of 18K yellow gold and black and white enamel. The ring, in the form of a band, has a rectangular center. It shows a white enamelled latin cross on a black ground. It opens at the back to reveal a secret compartment. Herein you can put a lock of hair or a picture of the person you are mourning. The front should also open but we could not open it and we did not want to force it. The band is completely decorated with white enamelled flowers and leaves, lined with gold on a black ground. The inside is engraved with a date : 'le 12 mai 1829'. The jewel weighs 5.40 gram (3.47 dwt) and is in excellent condition.
